Journal Postings: Elizabeth M. Staiger

(03/30/10): I am going to the V&A Museum, London!
The ticket is bought and the plans are in place. I will be at the Victoria and Albert Museum and other sites in London in no time (April 20th actually, which I feel is approaching rather quickly!). I am getting all of my ducks in a row in preparation for my trip. I purchased the book -The Language of Ornament- by author James Trilling for my travel read to provoke my thoughts for everything I am about to experience. I am very excited and can’t wait to report back.

In order to make my work more visible, I always wanted to create a website. Since I will hopefully maintain a web presence for the rest of my career, I decided to create the site myself rather than hire a professional to develop it for me. I made the site using Adobe Dreamweaver. It took me a little time, but I eventually got the hang of it. Now I finally have something to show for it. Please visit the site at www.elizabethstaiger.com to view my portfolio and more!

(11/11/09): Sculpture Objects & Functional Art (SOFA) Chicago: Post 1 of 4
Recently I attended the Sculpture Objects and Functional Art (S.O.F.A.) fair in Chicago. There, I had the pleasure of experiencing around 70 exhibiting galleries from all over our country and beyond. I was able to speak to some of the artists whose work was being exhibited. I also got to take part in a wide variety of lectures that were being offered, ranging from artists speaking about their own careers to artists commenting on the future of their fields. Seeing others present and speak about their work was a great learning experience.

One of these lectures which I specifically wanted to mention was titled “Philanthropy; The Impact of Scholarships.” It was presented by Ron and Anita Wornick of the Windgate foundation and the Center for Craft Creativity and design. This lecture included a 2007 Windgate Fellow, Andrea Donnelly, who spoke of the impact of the fellowship in her life as an artist. She did an awesome job, and I was happy to hear her talk. It was a great reminder of the wonderful opportunity that has been given to me by the Windgate Fellowship which allowed me to be right there at SOFA.

I also visited the Art Institute of Chicago Museum. I had a great time looking at their very extensive collection. I left with a ton of ideas and a camera full of images. Walking down the street, I unexpectedly ran into a gallery with a show of Elizabeth Murray’s work. I had read about her work previously and was so excited to finally see her work in person.

Overall I had truly a great experience in Chicago. I was very inspired by the entire experience that I had there. As soon as I returned home, I jumped right into my studio and got to work.

(10/28/09): Studio Update
Since going to SNAG I have been working to build a metals studio. I am learning a lot about what it takes to start a studio. I am currently acquiring tools and equipment so I can keep working on ideas I have. So far I have established a metal forming area, along with annealing and soldering capabilities. I am currently setting up a casting system. Recently I have been working on smaller projects -- mainly jewelry. I am looking forward to getting into some larger scale projects in the near future.

(09/29/09): Thank You
The Windgate Fellowship has allowed me to do so much in such a short amount of time. I feel very fortunate to have such a great opportunity. Thank you to the Center for Craft Creativity and Design and all who had made this opportunity possible

(09/29/09): Society of North American Goldsmiths Conference, Philadelphia
I recently attended the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) Conference in Philadelphia. I was really happy to be able to be take part in the activities that SNAG had put forth this year. It was truly a great opportunity in which left being inspired by the lectures, people, and the work that was showcased at the galleries and shows around Philadelphia. As a part of the SNAG conference I was able to attend the Exhibition in Motion at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There I was able to experience the art work at the museum and I was happy to see a good collection of work from people that are associated with SNAG. Though out the conference I got to meet and be exposed to people of the SNAG community whose work I have been familiar with in books, magazines, lectures and galleries. I really got a good sense of the history and community of SNAG. In all the conference was a very successful event and I was very grateful for the opportunity to be there.
